A peaceful beer garden, overlooking the mysterious Silbury Hill, quintessentially British and a great resting point between Marlborough and Devizes

It's hard to miss this old gem of a pub on the main A4 as you drive between Devizes and Marlborough. Famous as the inspiration for a scene in Dickens' The Pickwick Papers, this four hundred year old inn represents what an English pub should look like.

The Waggon and Horses is a quintessential and traditional thatched pub, built in 1669 with the foundation stones made of sarsen stone, which the locals believe to be from the Avebury stones.

Legend has it that the Waggon and Horses has two resident ghosts one of which is believed to be that of a previously landlady, in traditional white attire people have claimed to see her standing on the drinkers side of the bar although she is very harmless, the other is a Victorian Gent who stands at the fireplace, smoking a pipe with a little dog asleep beside him, people also claim that they have smelt the aroma of a pipe burning!

The Waggon and Horses is in ideal location nestled between Marlborough and Devizes it is a fantastic place to meet, eat and drink. Our extensive menu is complimented by our ever changing daily specials, all of which is locally sourced as far as possible with traditional and contemporary dishes alike. We serve many different wine from different countries to enjoy, on its own or to compliment any meal, and for those special occasions we offer a fantastic Champagne. Please ask for recommendations.

Just one hundred meters from the roundabout at the junction with the A361 between Avebury and Devizes, by road the Waggon and Horses is only six miles from Marlborough or Devizes. There is ample parking both behind the pub and on the opposite side of the A4. The team looks forward to welcoming you to our beautiful pub very soon!
