A peaceful beer garden, overlooking the mysterious Silbury Hill, quintessentially British and a great resting point between Marlborough and Devizes

It's hard to miss this old gem of a pub on the main A4 as you drive between Devizes and Marlborough. Famous as the inspiration for a scene in Dickens' The Pickwick Papers, this four hundred year old inn represents what an English pub should look like.

The Waggon and Horses is a quintessential and traditional thatched pub, built in 1669 with the foundation stones made of sarsen stone, which the locals believe to be from the Avebury stones.

Legend has it that the Waggon and Horses has two resident ghosts one of which is believed to be that of a previously landlady, in traditional white attire people have claimed to see her standing on the drinkers side of the bar although she is very harmless, the other is a Victorian Gent who stands at the fireplace, smoking a pipe with a little dog asleep beside him, people also claim that they have smelt the aroma of a pipe burning!

You could do no better than to park in the pub car park, navigate the five bar gate in the left hand corner of the car park and head off to Avebury via the popular Windmill Hill walk. This five mile trek takes you along a footpath and bridleway to the ancient Avebury stone circle, past the old Neolithic village remains and on a clear day there are views of Silbury Hill and the beautiful Wiltshire countryside beyond.
